The tab collar on a dress-shirt is not, as suggested in one article, an “an added security feature.” Instead, the small fabric tabs are used to affix and secure the tie more closely to the shirt by integrating with the knot, lest the tie fall out of proper alignment due to daily activity.

Shirts of this type are less common these days due to the recent and increasing popularity of thicker ties. The knots made by such ties look best when situated within the wide berth of the European style spread collar.
