Google Chrome OS
Google has announced Google Chrome OS, an open source operating system, based on the Linux kernel, that they are targeting at netbooks. Netbooks running Google OS will be available in the second half of 2010. The Official Google Blog writes:
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS […] the user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. [Users won’t] have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.
I’ve always been a huge proponent of a lightweight operating system running on lightweight, inexpensive hardware, but the idea of hacking a current netbook to run Linux (or Mac OS X) seems like too much work for too little reward. Maybe Google OS will be the answer.
