For Sale: My Nikon D700, 24-70mm lens, and 70-200mm lens

Update: Everything has been sold!

In September of 2008, I purchased one of the world’s finest digital SLR cameras, the Nikon D700 (currently $2,300 at Amazon). It’s a fantastic camera, and I’m incredibly happy with it, but I’m putting it up for sale here, it along with two of the lenses I purchased, the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED ($1,900 at Amazon) and the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED ($1,900 at Amazon).

I’ve kept the camera and both lenses in mint condition, and have saved all components, manuals, and even the original boxes and packaging.

How Much?

Update: Everything has been sold!

Make me an offer via email. I’ve listed the prices and related Amazon pages above. I’m flexible. I want to sell this gear.

I’ll take bids on the camera, the lenses, or the whole thing as a unit for the rest of the week and will update this page with more information.

Why Are You Selling It?

Update: Everything has been sold!

Good question. I love this camera, and the lenses are fantastic, but over the last few months, my son has grown from a baby to an incredibly mobile, energetic, and curious small boy. Keeping up with him — let alone trying to take his picture — while holding a solid camera with a really big lens can be perilous to both kid and gear.

About a year ago, a friend of mine who’s son is about a year older than mine was on the fence in making a decision between a D90 and a D700. It wasn’t a money issue, he assured me, but rather one of convenience. “Have you ever seen a farmer try to capture and subdue an unruly pig?”, he asked me. “Well, if you have, you know what running around after a one-and-a-half year old boy can be like. That’s why I’m getting the D90.”

I can now fully appreciate this wisdom, and as much as I love the D700 and it’s amazing FX lenses, it’s time to make a change.

Why Not Keep It and Buy Something Smaller?

Update: Everything has been sold!

I can’t afford it. I’m independent now, and as much as I wish I could keep the D700 and also pick up something else, I can’t make it work.

What Are You Going to Get Instead?

I will probably get a Nikon D90 and a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G lens. I’m also keeping my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G prime lens.

How Do I Make You an Offer Again?

You don’t, everything has been sold.

Pictures

Update: Everything has been sold!

Here’s a picture of the 24-70mm f/2.8, probably one of Nikon’s best lenses ever.

Here’s a picture of the 70-200mm f/2.8. A heavy beast, but I’ve never used a better zoom lens.
