Update: Everything has been sold!
In September of 2008, I purchased one of the world’s finest digital SLR cameras, the Nikon D700 (currently $2,300 at Amazon). It’s a fantastic camera, and I’m incredibly happy with it, but I’m putting it up for sale here, it along with two of the lenses I purchased, the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED ($1,900 at Amazon) and the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED ($1,900 at Amazon).
I’ve kept the camera and both lenses in mint condition, and have saved all components, manuals, and even the original boxes and packaging.

Why Are You Selling It?

Good question. I love this camera, and the lenses are fantastic, but over the last few months, my son has grown from a baby to an incredibly mobile, energetic, and curious small boy. Keeping up with him — let alone trying to take his picture — while holding a solid camera with a really big lens can be perilous to both kid and gear.
About a year ago, a friend of mine who’s son is about a year older than mine was on the fence in making a decision between a D90 and a D700. It wasn’t a money issue, he assured me, but rather one of convenience. “Have you ever seen a farmer try to capture and subdue an unruly pig?”, he asked me. “Well, if you have, you know what running around after a one-and-a-half year old boy can be like. That’s why I’m getting the D90.”
I can now fully appreciate this wisdom, and as much as I love the D700 and it’s amazing FX lenses, it’s time to make a change.
Why Not Keep It and Buy Something Smaller?

I can’t afford it. I’m independent now, and as much as I wish I could keep the D700 and also pick up something else, I can’t make it work.
What Are You Going to Get Instead?
I will probably get a Nikon D90 and a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G lens. I’m also keeping my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G prime lens.

I understand why you’re having to give this up, but I’m also a little sad. Would be a great topic for Tacksharp—-and also would let Duncan do more of the “hosting” bit and let you work on your “hosted” schpiel. [Not that having Duncan talk more is a problem, because it’s not!]

Wow. I was able to use the D700 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 once (a friend has it and I shot some pics of his baby being christened) and I could never ever give it away once I’d call it my own. Makes me a little sad. I wish I had the money to buy it, but I’m staying with my beloved D70.

Hey Dan. I just sent you an email. I’m interested in the D700 with the 24-70 lens (I already have the 70-200). I currently have a D300, a 17-55mm f/2.8 DX, and the 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 that I would be willing to use as a trade in with the deal. I know you said you want a D90, but would you be interested in a D300?

Hi Dan,
I’m a happy D90 owner, but just wanted to share with you that there is a 5 min limit imposed by the camera. You can take as many 5 min videos as your card can hold but only in 5 min blocks. I believe it’s due to the components getting rather hot, but I could be wrong.
Maybe this will be fixed in a future firmware perhaps ? Something to consider..

Certainly drool worthy, but I hear you on the D90 sized body [and good ‘lighter’ lenses like the 70-300mm vr or tamron 17-50mm 2.8]. I’d love to shoot a D700, but I’m happy with the gear I have and I’m happy to carry it almost everywhere. I’ll either throw it in a pack with a laptop during the day and not worry about carrying it and not taking any photos, or I’ll throw it on my back when I go for a bike ride or hike.
As a not-a-pro shooter its a sweet spot both size wise and financially.

You’ll love the 18-200mm. Recently picked it up, and while it’s surely not a perfect lens in terms of quality, it does what it’s built to be: an all-round lens. The convenience of it should be perfect for someone trying to chase after his little one.

Try taking a couple of young kids and a young, mad, full-of-energy collie for a walk. Across streams, fields, through bushes, nettles etc. That’s when even my D60 is more than I really want to deal with :-)

That’s the lens I wish I’d bought instead of the 18-55VR and 55-200VR, even though it costs more than the two lenses combined.

I can understand the reasoning, my 70-200 f4 sits forlorn since we had children. On lens I love for photography of my boys (3 and six months) is a 24mm full frame. I’ve got a canon EF 24mm f2.8, which becomes about a 38 on my 20D. I can get nice closeups, as it’ll focus at ten inches. It also gives nice environmental portraits if I can get a couple of feet back.
It is also a short lens, back of camera to front of lens is about 10 inches at most, so I can be about 2 foot from them and take in focus images. I find primes great for this kind of photography.
