Advice Needed: HDMI or Component?
06 April 2007 · 7 Comments · No tags
I have a new upconverting AV Receiver with two HDMI inputs and multiple Component inputs, and an HDMI output to the TV.
I have three devices and need to figure out the best way to hook up their video (I’ll be using optical audio connections):
- A DVD player which upconverts to 1080i
- An Apple TV that seems to output at 1080i
- A DVR (from the cable company) that outputs at 1080i
So here’s the question: I can only hook up 2 of the devices using HDMI … the other will have to be hooked up using Component.
How do I hook them up?

I'd put the Mac Mini on the component, unless you have access to a lot of really high quality video or plan on heavily using the HD rentals. If you do, go for the DVD player since it upconverts.
To be honest, the chances that you'll be able to tell the difference are pretty slim. Swap them around if you're unsure. I can't really tell the difference between HDMI and Component on my Mac Mini.

(Wow, I didn't check the date on this before I commented. I have no idea how it ended up in Google Reader...)

Assuming you have a HD-ready TV, hook the DVD player up via component and the other two by HDMI. You don't need to use the upscaler in the DVD player; your HD TV will upscale for you and probably do a better job.

The apple tv looks pretty dam good through regular component, and i assume you would spend more time watching cable content than content from itunes, so I'd say you'd be better off with the cable box through HDMI.
Pitty the cable boxes can output "at 1080i resolution", but the stream is usually compressed to shit that the higher resolution makes it look much worse.

Why not just skip the question and get a HDMI switch so everything can be on HDMI?
For example - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UQCAKW would let you put all three into one HDMI in.
